Chitradurga is a city located in the Indian
state of Karnataka.
Chitradurga gets its name from Chitrakaldurga, an umbrella-shaped lofty
hill found here. Tradition dates the Chitradurga district to the period of
the Ramayana
and Mahabharatha.
The
whole district lies in the valley of the Vedavati river, with the
Tungabhadra flowing in the NorthWest.
Bold
rock hills and picturesque valleys. Huge towering boulders in unimaginable
shapes. That is Chitradurga for you. This place is not known as the
"Place of stone fort" (Kallina Kote) for nothing. The landscape
looks much like a mischievous giant's playground - with boulders thrown
around, forming awesome silhouettes against the sky. And that could be true!
According to a story in the Epic Mahabharatha, a man-eating gaint named
Hidimbasura did line here on the Chitradurga hill - a source of terror to
everyone around. And then Pandavas
came here with their mother Kunti
in the course of their exile and Bhima
had a duel with Hidimba. Hidimba was slain by Bhima and peace returned to
the area. These amazing boulders could well be part of the arsenal used
during that duel! Seriously though, these boulders and the major part of
the city rests on belong to the oldest rock formation in the country.
Chitradurga Fort: The Historic Fort is a marvel of military architecture
that made it impregnable by the Nayak PaLayagars. It has 19
gateways, 38 posterior entrances, a palace, a mosque,
granaries, oil pits, four secret entrances and water tanks.
Amidst rocky surroundings inside the fort complex on the
hill are many temples. It is on a hilltop with a good view
of the surrounding plains. The place is renowned for its Kallina
Kote ("the place of the stone fort"),
and is home to the "Fort of Seven Rounds" (ಏಳು
ಸುತ್ತಿನ
ಕೋಟೆ),
built with large stones. In the hill fort there are temples
of the Sampige Siddeshwara, Hidimbeshwara (a cave shrine),
Ekanathamma, Phalguneshwara, Gopalakrishan etc., amidst
thick rocky surroundings.

Obavvana
Kindi (The crack): During the
reign of Madakari Nayaka, the city of Chitradurga was
besieged by the troops of Hyder
Ali.
A chance sighting of a woman entering the Chitradurga fort
through a crack hole in the rocks led to a clever plan by Hyder
Ali to send his soldiers through the crack hole. The defense
guard on duty of the port near that crack hole had just gone
home as usual asking his wife to guard till he is back from
his lunch. The wife of that guard, Obavva while in her
temporary seat, noticed the soldiers emerging out of this
crack, Obavva was not perturbed. As she was carrying with
her, the Onake (a wooden long club meant for pounding paddy
grains) she killed and quietly moved the dead, so that
hundreds of them entered and fell, without raising any
suspicion. The guard, Obavva's husband, upon his return from
his lunch was shocked to see Obavva standing with a blood
stained Onake and hundreds of dead bodies of the enemy fleet
around her. The passage still remains as a historical
witness for the story, beside the Tanniru DoNi -a small
water source which holds cold water all round the year.
Though her sincere brave attempt saved the fort this time,
Madakari could not resist the attack of 1799 by Hyder Ali.
The fort of Chitradurga was lost for Hyder Ali once for
all.
Vaani Vilas Sagara: It is also called Mari Kanive
(ಮಾರಿ
ಕಣಿವೆ)
is a dam
near Hiriyur Taluk, Chitradurga District,
in the Indian
state of Kar nataka.
It is the oldest dam in the state. The dam was built by the Mysore
Maharajas pre-independence across the river Vedavathi.
The dam is an exquisite piece of architecture, an
engineering marvel for that time, and provides water to lots
of surrounding cities, towns and villages, which are largely
dry lands of the Deccan
area of Central Karnataka.
This dam is the source of domestic water for Hiriyur
and Chitradurga.
It irrigates more than 100 km² of land in Hiriyur
and Challakere
taluks through right and left bank canals. The dam was
constructed by a team led by an Engineer called 'Tara Chand
Dalal' at the order of his Highness the Maharaja
of Mysore
Sri Krishnaraja
Wodeyar IV.
The dam has been a tourist attraction for many years, but
has been apparently neglected as a prime tourist
destination. Recently, though, the development work
undertaken by the forest department to restore the nearby
forest cover, and the 'panchavati' gardens - a garden of
medicinal plants with the old Indian cultural theme has
improved the tourist figures, making it a popular weekend
picnic spot. The 'panchavati' garden has medicinal plants
lined up representing cultural themes - the 'Rashis', 'Sapta
swaras', 'Nava grahas' and many more. The tourists who visit
Chitradurga
and Hosdurga
often visit Mari kanive on the way. The historic Maarikaamba
temple here also attracts many tourists. The place is around
20 Km drive from Hiriyur
on a deviation from NH4 (Bangalore
-Pune
National Highway).
Murugha Rajendra Bruhanmatha: The first Murugha
Rajendra Mutha at Chitradurga was built on the
Ch inmuladri
hills by Palegar Bichugatti Bharamanna Nayaka for Guru Shanthaveera
Swamiji of the 8th Pontiff of Murugha tradition. Later it was shifted
to the present mutt in 1703 AD which is situated at the left side of
Chitradurga - Davanagere road near M.K. Hatti. Now the 27th Pontiff of
the order Sri Shivamurthy Murugha Rajendra Sharanaru prerides over the
muth. The muth is engaged in propagating Basavadharma. It runs Schools,
Colleges, Hostels, Orphanage , Free food homes, apart from organizing
religious, Social and Cultural function. It arranges mass marriage,
widow remarriages, intercaste marriages for the benefit of people. The
Murugha Vana in the premises of the mutt is a beautiful botanical
garden.
Chandravalli Gardens:
Chandravalli is an ancient Historical site situated in the western part of the
Chi nmuladri hills. A motorable road to the left on Chitradurga - Holalkere high way leads us to Chandravalli Valley.
Archaelogical discoveries made in the Ankali Mutha are found
here. The sites of Historical excavation, Tiger boulder, Siddeshwara temple, Ankli
Mutha, Panchalingeswara Cave Temple, Dhavalappanagudda and the Chandravalli Lake are the worth seeing
place here.
